Call for contributors: Issue 12: Professionalisation & Deradicalisation in Development Education

We would like to invite academics and practitioners in the field of development education and related adjectival educations to submit article abstracts for consideration for Issue 12, on the theme Professionalisation and Deradicalisation in Development Education.  Issue 12 will ask whether the greater professionalisation of development education through closer integration with education and government policy and practice has led to a deradicalisation of the sector.  It will explore the positive and negative effects of a more formally organised sector that began as a radical endeavour to challenge the social and economic causes of inequality and injustice.  Articles will examine the growth of the sector, its successes and failures, and assess whether development education as currently organised and practiced can achieve its stated objectives. .  The deadline for Issue 12 articles is December 2010.  For more information on the journal and to access past issues, see: www.developmenteducationreview.com.

Submissions and suggestions for contributors or topics should be sent to Jenna Coriddi, Training and Research Officer: jenna@centreforglobaleducation.com.  Tel: +44 (0) 28 9024 1879.  Address: Centre for Global Education, 9 University Street, Belfast, BT7 1FY.

What Climate Change Brings to the Development Education Agenda

What Climate Change Brings to the Development Education Agenda is the title of an upcoming Centre for Global Education seminar, which will be held Tuesday, 23 November at the Junction in Derry/Londonderry from 10:00am to 4pm.  In this workshop, David Selby, global educator and co-editor of the just-published book, Education and Climate Change: Living and Learning in Interesting Times, will argue that runaway climate change calls for a serious revisiting of the assumptions, key messages, frameworks and focuses of development (and global) education.  Climate change cannot be laid aside by development educators as being an ‘environmental’ issue and, hence, peripheral to their field of vision.  He will argue that the climate threat raises fundamental questions about the human condition that are central to development education and to all its ‘sister’ educations.  The workshop will be highly interactive with much of the time given over to activities and discussion but with short presentations scattered throughout.  Participants will go away with a portfolio of activities for use in teacher and community education and the school classroom.  The workshop involves a collaboration between the Centre for Global Education and Sustainability Frontiers.  For more information and to register please contact Jenna Coriddi, Training and Research Officer: jenna@centreforglobaleducation.com, tel: +44 (0)28 9024 1879.
